Cooperative photoinduced metastable phase control in strained manganite films.

چکیده
A major challenge in condensed-matter physics is active control of quantum phases. Dynamic control with pulsed electromagnetic fields can overcome energetic barriers, enabling access to transient or metastable states that are not thermally accessible. Here we demonstrate strain-engineered tuning of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 into an emergent charge-ordered insulating phase with extreme photo-susceptibility, where even a single optical pulse can initiate a transition to a long-lived metastable hidden metallic phase. Comprehensive single-shot pulsed excitation measurements demonstrate that the transition is cooperative and ultrafast, requiring a critical absorbed photon density to activate local charge excitations that mediate magnetic-lattice coupling that, in turn, stabilize the metallic phase. These results reveal that strain engineering can tune emergent functionality towards proximal macroscopic states to enable dynamic ultrafast optical phase switching and control.

Strain-induced ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic LuMnO3 thin films.
Single phase and strained LuMnO(3) thin films are discovered to display coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders. A large moment ferromagnetism (≈1μ(B)), which is absent in bulk samples, is shown to display a magnetic moment distribution that is peaked at the highly strained substrate-film interface. We further show that the strain-induced ferromagnetism and the antiferromagnetic o...
متن کاملInfluence of strain on the atomic and electronic structure of manganite films
A study of the long-range, local and electronic structure of Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films of varying thickness between 500 and 2000 Å has been performed. Local structure measurements at the Sr K-edge reveal a reduction of the Mn–O–Mn bond angles in films below 1000 Å. Spin-polarized measurements reveal splitting of the Mn 3d eg state in the strained region of the films and are consistent with a two-lay...
متن کاملEffects of Ga- and Sb-precursor chemistry on the alloy composition in pseudomorphically strained GaAs1 ySby films grown via metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy
GaAs-based multiple quantum well (MQW) heterostructures comprised of metastable alloys such as GaAs1 ySby-GaAs1 zNz have potential for realizing high-performance and low temperature-sensitivity lasers in the 1.55 mm wavelength region. However, straininduced ‘lattice-latching’ and Sb-surface segregation effects limit the Sb-mole fractions in the pseudomorphically strained GaAs1 ySby layers to yp...
متن کاملUltrafast photoinduced phase separation dynamics in Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films
The time resolved Magnetooptical Kerr effect in the substrate-strain-induced insulating ferromagnetic phase in (Pr0.6Ca0.4)MnO3 thin films on two different substrates was measured in a magnetic field up to 1.1T. The photoinduced Kerr rotation and ellipticity show remarkably different magnetic-field dependence. From the comparison of the magnetic field dependencies of the photoinduced and static...

Fully-strained single-crystal metastable Ge12xSnx alloys were grown on Ge~001! up to their critical epitaxial thickness values tepi(x) in order to probe surface roughening pathways leading to heteroepitaxial breakdown during low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy under large compressive strain. All films with x.0.09 have comparable roughnesses while films with x,0.09 are considerably rougher wi...
